WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Greenville Triumph returns to the pitch for its third and final match in a 10-day period. They face rivals, Union Omaha, to round out the Battle of the Belt series for 2023. Both previous matches concluded in draws and Greenville keeping the belt since its 2-0 win over Omaha on June 18th, 2022.
Wednesday night, the home side collected its 10th win in Paladin Stadium. Greenville bested Chattanooga 2-1 with a gritty goal from Lucas Coutinho and a precisely executed set play that was finished off by Jacob Labovitz. The win pushed GTSC into fifth on the league table with a 10-7-6 record. Greenville’s rookie goalkeeper, Gunther Rankenburg saw his first professional start in place of an injured Jared Mazzola. Former Omaha player, Devin Boyce, and Leonardo Castro returned to the 18 and earned limited minutes in the midweek match to prepare for Saturday. Greenville will try to deny Omaha its sixth victory and possession of the belt despite weary legs after Wednesday’s battle against Chattanooga. Greenville’s deep bench and rotation of men will be essential in this upcoming match.
Saturday’s opponent, Union Omaha, has been on the rise in form and in the table, moving into the second seed heading in to Saturday. The Nebraska side looks for its sixth consecutive win this weekend to break the league record previously set by Lansing Ignite’s winning streak. The Owls have a threatening offense, tallying 13 goals in the past five matches. Despite a looming attacking presence, Omaha also conceded six goals during that time.
