Greenville, SC – The Greenville Triumph battled hard but ultimately fell short against the visiting Richmond Kickers, falling 1-0 on a cold night at Legacy Early College Field. Richmond picked up their first win on the season, moving to 1-2-1, while the Triumph fell to 2-2-0.
The Triumph challenged the Kickers early, outshooting them 4-0 in the first half but failing to convert any of their chances. Though the defense held strong early, the Kickers broke through in the 49th minute on a strong run into the box from Joe Gallardo. The Triumph would create a handful of chances late but fell despite outshooting the Kickers 10-3.
“We had plenty of chances, but things happen and we just couldn’t convert,” said head coach John Harkes. “Sometimes you think to yourself that it’s not going to be your night. When these moments come about, what’s important is how we respond, take those lessons and apply it the next week in training to prepare for games like the tough road environment we’ll face in Madison on Saturday.
The match saw Greenville winger Omar Mohamed’s first action of the season, as he made his debut following a preseason ankle injury.
“It was exciting to hit the field and get that first game action in,” said Mohamed. “I was trying to get passes, crosses, help the team get back in the game. It was ultimately not the result we wanted but we had our chances and hopefully next time the ball will bounce our way.”
The Triumph finish their first home stand 2-1-0, and head to Madison, Wisconsin next Saturday to face Forward Madison in their inaugural home opener. The game can be viewed on the ESPN+ app. The Triumph return home Saturday, May 4 against North Texas SC. Kick is at 7:00 pm, and tickets can be purchased by clicking here.
