Greenville, SC – The Greenville Triumph return home for the second time in five days on Wednesday, May 8th for a 7:00 pm bout with Tormenta FC in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The Open Cup is the oldest annual team sport tournament in the United States. It crowned its first winner back in 1914. The tournament is conducted on a single-game, knockout basis.
For Wednesday’s match, the Triumph are offering $5 (plus fees) general admission tickets as well as FREE parking. The pre-game Fan Fest will be from 5-7pm with games, food, drinks and live music.
What to watch For
- Revenge: The two clubs have already faced one another in 2019, meeting on March 29 in the first match in USL League One history. Despite outshooting Tormenta and controlling possession, the Triumph fell 1-0 after allowing a breakaway goal in the 72nd minute.
- Pro vs Pro: Greenville and Tormenta are the only two teams to draw another professional team in the first round, which should make for a highly competitive match.
- A little bit of history: Head Coach John Harkes won the U.S. Open Cup in 1996 with D.C. United in their inaugural season. Could history repeat itself with Harkes making another run as part of an inaugural squad?
