Greenville, SC – An early goal for the Triumph wasn’t enough to hold back the precise FC Tucson attack as the Triumph fell 3-1 at Legacy Early College Field in a battle of teams on the playoff bubble.
The match began with Greenville seizing early momentum, striking first with a goal from Carlos Gomez. Gomez created a breakaway in the 15′ minute after hard defensive pressure on the Tucson backline to net his second goal of the 2019 season.
Despite falling behind, FC Tucson took little time responding to the Triumph’s early lead. In the 19′ minute of play, FC Tucson midfielder, Devyn Jambga, buried the equalizer with a heated shot outside the ’18 yard box.
The match turned early in the second half, as Tucson took advantage of a slow Triumph defense to tally two quick goals, with Kyle Venter scoring in the 52′ minute and Devyn Jambga collecting his second of the match to put Tucson ahead 3-1. Off-target shots and questionable calls hindered the Triumph attack late, as they were unable to make up the two-goal differential and fell at home for the first time in league play since May 4.
“I was pleased with how the guys came out,” said Head Coach John Harkes. “We were aggressive early and Carlos made a great play to get us the early goal. After that though, we were slow to react and and we didn’t come out of the half with enough energy. We made a mistake or two and then found ourselves chasing the match. Moving forward, we need more conviction in our play and we need to make sure we don’t let up even with a lead.”
The Triumph (5-5-6) head back to Texas to face league-leading North Texas SC on Friday, July 26. They return home to Legacy Early College Field on Saturday, August 3rd to face South Georgia Tormenta FC. The Pregame Fan Fest begins at 5:00 pm, gates open at 6:00 pm and kickoff is at 7:00 pm.
