No. 3 Greenville Triumph SC host Toronto FC II for the first time on Legacy Early College Field to play the clubs’ third match of the season. Greenville leads the series 1-0-1.
What To Watch For:
One Goal, Two Goals, Three Goals, Four: Out of the Triumph’s 24 matches played this season, the team has managed six multi-goal efforts, with three occurring in the last six weeks. Greenville is fresh off of their most recent occurance, as Triumph forward Carlos Gomez led Greenville to a 4-0 blanking of FC Tucson that featured the club’s first-ever hat trick. As playoffs near, Triumph SC seems to be climbing to the peak of their offensive potential.
All in the Build Up: The last few games for Greenville have seen an array of missing players due to injuries or yellow card accumulations – Paul Clowes against Richmond, Tyler Polak against Tucson, and season-ending injuries to goal-scorer Jake Keegan and right back Max Hemmings Despite the adjustments these challenges have necessitated, they haven’t hindered the ability of the team to develop rolling offensive performances. Midfielders Aaron Walker and Paul Clowes were instrumental to the club’s 4-0 win against Tucson with their movement off the ball and ability to set the game’s tempo even when Greenville was pressed. With a passing success rate of 76% this season (34% of total passes being played forward), the build-up to the final third will continue to be an important component as playoffs near.
Playoffs Are Coming: For those of you that read that in your best Game of Thrones voice, we appreciate you. Unlike the bleak future Jon Snow and The North seemed to impossibly face, Greenville’s upcoming weeks look much brighter (wood was knocked on before the typing of this article). With four matches left in the season, two at home and two away, a playoff birth becomes realistic with each passing weekend. Last week, the Triumph took care of business in a big way, stacking its’ playoff chances to a favorable percentage. We won’t break it all down quite yet, but let’s just say… getting the right results at home against Toronto would be a big deal.
