Greenville, SC – Buoyed by another offensive burst, Greenville Triumph SC increased their playoff chances with a defeat of Canadian side Toronto FC II 3-1, their second win against TFC II this year.
Greenville struck first in the 18′ minute from the foot of midfielder Paul Clowes. Evan Lee found brief possession inside the box and laid it off for the Englishman, who finished the ball in absolute class to give Greenville a 1-0 lead and net his first goal with the club.
The roaring Greenville offense tallied their second goal of the match just two minutes into second half action when the Triumph midfielder Paul Clowes split the defense with a perfectly weighted ball into the run of Cameron Saul, tucking away his second goal of the season.
The 2-goal lead was brief, as Toronto answered the 2-0 Triumph lead with a goal of their own only a minute later after Franco Ramos Mingo connected with a corner kick into the near post past Dallas Jaye to cut the lead 2-1.
With Toronto only a few matches away from playoff elimination, the Canadian side fought hard to get one goal back and did not let up throughout the second half. Greenville withstood the pressure and answered back when Omar Mohammed, making his first Triumph appearance since international duty, connected with Carlos Gomez in the 84th minute.
Shortly after entry, Mohammed went streaking down the left flank where he slot the ball back towards the incoming Gomez run to tally his sixth goal of the year and his fourth in the last two matches.
“The guys did a great job tonight executing what we worked on in training, and the goals were there. We just have to keep pushing and moving forward with how well we’re playing,” said Coach John Harkes about his club.
Triumph SC closed out the match with another three points and a massive step towards the postseason. The club needs only four points to clinch playoffs with three matches left to play.
