With the 2019 season wrapped up, Greenville Triumph looks back at some impressive stats and numbered facts from the club’s inaugural USL League One campaign.
35: The total number of USL League One Team of the Week appearances by Triumph SC players. Jake Keegan, whose season was cut short due to injury, led the way with eight Team of the Week honors, followed five total appearances from Cole Seiler and four weeks for the co-captain, Aaron Walker.
5: The total number of Player of the Week honors earned by Triumph SC players throughout the regular season. Carlos Gomez led the team with two POTW nods followed by Paul Clowes, Tyler Polak and Dallas Jaye with one each.
2: The number of Player of the Month honors earned by Triumph SC players throughout the regular season. Dallas Jaye was named USL League One Player of the Month for August and Carlos Gomez earned the recognition the next month!
8: The number of multi-goal games throughout the year. The first multi-goal game for Triumph SC was recorded during the club’s inaugural home opener, defeating Lansing Ignite 2-1. Greenville would only showcase two more multi-goal games during the first half of the season, with one of those games resulting in a loss to Chattanooga. Flash forward to the last game in July and Triumph SC would take a season-defining three points from league-leading North Texas SC with four goals, setting fire to Greenville’s attack. Greenville would go on to tally five of their eight multi-goal games during the second half of the season with three straight 1+ goal games in the month of September.
29,687: The total accumulated minutes of the 20 players that stepped onto the pitch during the 2019 season. The Minutes Played column was led by defensive standout Tyler Polak (2,610 minutes) and GK Dallas Jaye (2,610 minutes). Both players started 29 matches, each only missing one match throughout the season (Polak – yellow card suspension, Jaye – international callup). Aaron Walker and Evan Lee played well over the 2,000 minute mark racking up 2,577 and 2,518 minutes respectively. Three other Triumph SC players went over the 2,000 minute mark, including Cole Seiler (2,483), Carlos Gomez (2,261) and central defender Kevin Politz, with 2,242 minutes played.
14: The league-leading stat in shutouts. Perhaps the most defining characteristic of the Greenville Triumph squad was their defensive presence and consistency. Only five players contributed to every single Triumph clean sheet (meaning they started or subbed in), proving that the defensive responsibility fell on every player and made Greenville a true 11-man defensive unit.
3: The number of Triumph SC players awarded an All-League First Team honor. Greenville was the only club to boast three players on the First Team — Tyler Polak (D), Cole Seiler (D) and Dallas Jaye (GK).
75.8%: The average percentage of successful passes per game. Triumph SC was a team that prided themselves on ball possession – boasting 8,880 successful passes during the season, an average of 390 passes per game. Head Coach John Harkes constructed a team to build attacks from the back line, and it showed with nearly an 88% passing accuracy in the defensive half.
6: The team’s longest unbeaten streak. After turning a corner at the end of July to beat North Texas SC on the road 4-0, Triumph SC would spend all of August undefeated. Here’s what it looked like: July 26 vs NTSC, 4-0. August 3 vs Tormenta, 1-0. August 9 vs Toronto, 3-1. August 17 vs Forward Madison, 0-0. August 23 vs Toronto 0-0. August 28 vs Forward Madison, 1-0. Greenville gained 14 points during the six-game streak and brought themselves back in to playoff contention.
1: The number of goalkeepers in League One to tally 10 shutouts. Dallas Jaye led the league by a wide margin, with 14 clean sheets on the year. Jaye was named the first-ever Golden Glove Winner and 2019’s Goalkeeper of the Year. He finished the regular season with 52 saves and only 23 goals allowed.
4,014: The largest crowd in attendance at Legacy Early College Field to watch a Greenville Triumph SC match! The Upstate showed up in sell-out fashion twice during 2019. It’s only fitting that it was the opening match on April 6th and the team’s last home game on September 27th. Thank you, Triumph Nation!
