Greenville, SC – The Triumph have agreed to transfer defender Kevin Politz to USL Championship side Hartford Athletic, pending league and federation approval. Greenville will receive a transfer fee and future considerations in return for the transfer. The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed. Politz becomes the third USL League One player to be transferred to the USL Championship, following Tormenta FC defender Conner Antley (Indy) and Richmond striker Joe Gallardo (Real Monarchs).
Politz, a center back, was a defensive anchor for the veteran Triumph back line in their Inaugural season. He started 25 games for the club, making 27 total appearances across 2,242 minutes played. Politz ended the season with a total of 74 clearances, 10 defensive blocks and 26 interceptions. Though Politz’s time in Greenville was highlighted by his stellar defense, his 2019 season will also be remembered for his late go-ahead goal to seal Greenville’s first-ever win in their inaugural home match against Lansing.
“Teaching and developing players for the next level is critical to our mission,” said head coach John Harkes. “Kevin is a quality player and has defended & played so well for us in the first year of the Greenville Triumph. We’re sad to see him go, but transferring our first player shows the early growth of our club and provides trust and value in our staff and players.”
The Morganville, New Jersey native came to Greenville in 2019 after spending time in the New York Red Bulls Academy. Politz played collegiately at Wake Forest, where he earned two all-conference selections and was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Politz becomes the lone starter from Greenville’s 2019 back line to leave the club, as Cole Seiler, Evan Lee and Tyler Polak all return in 2020. Last week, Greenville signed former Lansing captain and center back Brandon Fricke to help fill the void left by Politz’s departure.
