Greenville, SC – USL League One announced Thursday that Greenville Triumph SC forward Marios Lomis has been voted USL League One’s Player of the Month for April and May after recording five goals and four key passes in five games, leading his side to four wins and a draw to open its 2021 season.
“I wasn’t lying about the bottle of ketchup analogy,” said Lomis, referencing a May 1 interview where he likened goal-scoring to opening a bottle of ketchup: once it’s open, it starts to flow. “But I’m really happy with being named the Player of the Month right from the start. It speaks to the hard work we have put in as a team and the confidence I get from the coaching staff. I would like to keep this going with the Triumph and to be top of the league in November!”
The Bennebroek, Netherlands native joined Triumph SC last offseason after spending the 2018 and 2019 seasons as well as the conclusion of the 2020 campaign with North Carolina FC when the club competed in the USL Championship. During his time in the Championship, which also included a stint with El Paso Locomotive FC, Lomis recorded 11 goals and three assists in 54 appearances.
Lomis ended the month of May leading the League One Golden Boot race. He scored two goals on his home debut for Greenville, spurring his side to a dominant 4-0 victory in a rematch of the 2019 League One Final against North Texas SC.
Lomis has scored one goal in each of Triumph SC’s three games since, giving him an active four-game scoring streak which is currently the longest in the league. The Dutchman is averaging a goal per 74 minutes of play so far this season.
Lomis received 49 percent of a weighted poll that included the USL League One Technical Committee and an online fan vote held at USLLeagueOne.com. Fort Lauderdale CF midfielder George Acosta finished second on 32 percent after recording a goal and four assists in seven games, while Union Omaha defender Damia Viader finished third on 16 percent as he recorded a goal, an assist, and three shutouts in five games.
