DeTuro and Schueppert Return to the pitch for Liberty inaugural season
Greenville, SC (April 25, 2022) – The Greenville Liberty SC has added two more players to their inaugural roster, the club announced today. Former Virginia Tech University forward, Katie Deturo and former Clemson midfielder, Haley Schueppert will be joining the team for the season, pending league and federation approval. Both players will bring valued experience to the new club following the completion of their collegiate careers.
A graduate of Virginia Tech, DeTuro, appeared in 74 matches, scoring six goals and three assists, including decisive goals against nationally-ranked Maryland in 2012 and 2013. During her four seasons in Blacksburg, the New Jersey native lead the Hokies to a 56-29-6 record, including four straight NCAA appearances, a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2011, a Final Four appearance and an ACC Tournament Finalist in 2013. DeTuro was also chosen as the VT Women’s Soccer Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year in 2012-13.
“Katie is a powerful, motivated woman. She came to our open tryouts and did a fabulous job connecting the midfield and final third play in transitional moments and has proven her ability to finish,” said Head Coach Julie Carlson. “She has a plethora of experience playing at a highly successful level in the ACC, which is an important addition alongside younger players who will learn and grow from her and raise their level of the game.”
DeTuro currently resides in Greenville, SC and works as the Global Content Program Manager that supports HR Systems for all expansion types in North America at Amazon.
Schueppert competed as a Tiger for three seasons, logging 217 minutes and earning the Bill DeAndrea Tiger PAW Award in 2018 and ACC Honor Roll. Before her move to South Carolina, the Colorado Native was named to the US Youth Team roster and attended two US Soccer U18 Youth Camps. In 2016, the midfielder garnered academic All-State First Team and First Team Continental All-League Athlete. She earned All-State Honors in 2015 for high school and was named Second Team Continental All-League Athlete.
“Haley is a true role model for our younger players coming into this program. Not only is she a talented soccer player with a quality technical platform, range of passing ability and intelligent IQ for the game, but she shows how important character and balance are in performing your best,” said Carlson. “She has a love and passion for the game and will be a composed leader that will invest in the team’s success and development.”
Schueppert also lives in Greenville, SC and works at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Greenville as the Sales Coordinator.
DeTuro and Schueppert add to a select number of post-collegiate players that will help bring experience to the newly formed team. The Greenville Liberty host their Home Opener May 20th versus the North Carolina Courage U23. Home Opener and Season tickets are on sale now.
