Liberty takes home Prisma Health Cup over Columbia’s SC United Bantams in first action
Greenville, SC (May 8, 2022) – The Greenville Liberty Soccer Club made a victorious debut, winning 1-0 against in-state foe SC United Bantams in a preseason scrimmage at Legacy Early College. After holding SC United to zero shots in the first half, an own goal from the Columbia club was the deciding goal in Greenville’s victory.
Greenville was on the attack early, finding early success up the wide parts of the field. Auburn’s Carly Thatcher and UNCC’s Bailey Manfredi both were able to challenge the Bantams backline with speed. Greenville looked impressive in the middle of the pitch as well, with a strong showing from Caroline Conti and Sarah Jacobs to control play and strike attempts from distance. Both sides remained scoreless at the half, despite numerous chances from Greenville.
After holding SC Bantams to zero shots or corners in the first half and collecting 13 shots of their own, Greenville appeared dominate in the match. However, the Bantams returned to the pitch with momentum and challenged Greenville keeper, Allanah Blye within the first 15 minutes. The constant Liberty pressure became too much for the Bantams to handle, as Greenville sent in a corner that deflected off SC United for an own goal in the 64th minute, giving Greenville a lead it would not relinquish.
“Great start to the preseason. I think they were totally pumped when they got in the locker room and could kind of feel the aroma in the air. We’re still missing some people but they just were fired up. I think it’s just new and they had something to play for which made it a lot of fun.” said Head Coach Julie Carlson
Greenville Liberty SC will travel to its first regular season USL W League match next Sunday at the Charlotte Independence at 3:00pm. The following Friday, May 20th, they will host the Greenville Liberty Inaugural Home Opener at 7:00 pm.
