Labovitz’s two goals not enough as own-goal proves the difference against Flamingos
Madison, WI (June 11, 2022) – The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club could not pick up the second win for Upstate soccer on the evening, as the club fell 3-2 on the road to Forward Madison on Saturday night. The loss marked the first time Greenville has dropped a match to Madison in three and a half seasons of League One play.
Just as the Greenville Liberty’s match ended in favor of the home side at Triumph Stadium, the men’s side began their competition in Madison, WI. Greenville went down a goal early after Forward Madison was able to catch the Triumph defense on its heels just two minutes into the match. In their first 25 minutes of play, Greenville looked disjointed and lacked the discipline that led to their 2-0 victory last week. Although possession was split, the half was characterized by turnovers and incomplete passes from both sides. Closing the first half, former Virginia Tech Hokie, Jacob Labovitz, sent a laser into the back of the Madison net with precision to tie the match up 1-1 going in to the halftime break.
Once again, Greenville began a half from behind after an own-goal by defender Nate Shultz puts Madison ahead 2-1 in the 48th minute. Midway through the half, a counterattack from Madison left Triumph keeper Paul Christensen one-on-one against striker Matheus Cassini, which led to Madison’s third goal on the evening to make it 3-1. The Triumph fought back, though, beginning to edge forward in the Madison defensive third just in time for Labovitz to score his second goal of match. Labovitz, who scored his first professional goal two weeks ago, now has three on the season to tie for the team lead. Although he was able to reduce the difference, Madison held strong in the final minutes and walked away with the 3-2 win despite a last-ditch effort from Greenville in the extended stoppage time.
Greenville travels to Union Omaha next weekend for a difficult away match at 8:00 pm ET. Then the team returns home for a match on June 25th to play the Northern Colorado Hailstorm at 7:00 PM.
