WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club plays the first match of its final two-match home stand tomorrow at 7 PM against a red-hot FC Tucson club.
Despite forecasts calling for poor weather earlier in the week, this weekend looks clear and mild for the Triumph’s return home tomorrow night. GTSC is back in the Upstate following three weeks of road matches, two of which resulted in one or more red cards and last-minute equalizers. Although not always pretty, Greenville’s gritty determination has pushed them through this trying month of matches and kept them near the top of the table.
Positioned second in league standings, Greenville looks to clinch a playoff berth for the fourth consecutive year with a win on Saturday. The club sits just two points below rivals, Union Omaha, in goal differential, but is ahead of Omaha on wins. To claim that second ranking and the first-round bye, Greenville will need to win its remaining matches if no help is given, as the Triumph’s magic number to clink the bye sits at nine. Dropped points from Omaha, who faces a tough remaining schedule, could help the Triumph, though the Upstate side must finish the regular season against league-leading Richmond on the road. The remaining playoff spots are up for grabs for almost anyone, with second through eight separated by only seven points. It’s certain that Greenville will need to gain points and keep 11 men on the field in these next three matches to compete for a home playoff match.
Tucson enters Saturday a longshot to make the playoffs, sitting second to last in the standings. Despite the low tenth-place position, the Arizona club is one of the hottest teams in the league, holding a five-match unbeaten streak, tallying a league-best 13 points during the span and most recently defeating playoff-hopeful Chattanooga 2-1.
