WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club will face league-leader, the Richmond Kickers this weekend in City Stadium. Saturday’s result will determine Greenville’s final position in league standings and whether they will receive a first-round bye for the 2022 USL League One Playoffs.
Following a sold-out crowd and 1-0 victory in their regular season home finale, Greenville heads north for their final match before entering postseason. Although, Greenville broke through their 6-match winless streak, they will need to lock in three points to cement their second place standing. However, if the Triumph is unable to record a win, a loss or draw for Chattanooga at Tormenta and a loss or draw for Omaha could still send Greenville into the playoffs ahead.
Saturday also marked the end of a scoring drought for striker, Jacob Labovitz, who tallied the only goal of the match. The team now returns to Richmond where the rookie recorded his first hat trick earlier this year. The Triumph bring with them a 2-0 record against the Kickers in 2022 overcoming the highly ranked team both home and on the road. The away team will seek a 3-0 series record to close out the regular season on Saturday before flipping the switch to playoff mode for their fourth straight appearance in the tournament.
Having already anchored their position at first in league standings, a first-round bye and playoff berth, the Richmond Kickers have an opportunity to knock off the number two team forcing them to play the following weekend. Further raising the stakes, the Kickers have yet to defeat the Triumph this season and now face them during their regular season home finale. The Virginia team is safety locked in at first place even with a loss, but will they choose to rest and recover as they enter playoffs or try to eliminate Greenville’s chances at a first round-bye and stand their ground at City Stadium.
