WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club kicks off its fourth playoff appearance Saturday night against Tormenta FC at 7:30 PM in Triumph Stadium in USL League One Semifinals.
Greenville is no stranger to the pressure of the playoffs, having competed in the Final each season since its inception in 2019. They bring an experienced coaching staff and core group of players to this year’s Semifinal matchup, including the only coach in the league to achieve four playoff appearances in John Harkes and the only player to earn four All-League honors in Brandon Fricke. Evan Lee and Paul Christensen bring accolades of their own, as 2022 first team All-League and Goalkeeper of the Year Nominee in addition to a roster full of other accredited players.
The elimination match will be the second between the regional rivals after the two played a U.S. Open Cup tie at Triumph Stadium in 2019. The match ended in thrilling fashion after a Triumph goal in the waning moments.
Returning to 2022, Greenville emerged from the regular season campaign with a 12-8-10 overall record and second-place position despite going winless against Saturday’s opponent in three matches. A depleted roster and ever-changing lineup provided challenges for Greenville, but they have managed to find their footing in the final matches of the season to secure a first-round bye. The much-needed week of rest has benefitted the squad, as they’ll look to return multiple players from injury for the playoff matchup. Triumph cornerstone, Tyler Polak may be available for the first-time in months, and both Evan Lee and Jesus Ibarra have been dropped from the injury report after recovering from nicks earlier in October.
Unlike Greenville, the South Georgia team earned a playoff berth for the first time and is fresh off a Saturday night quarterfinal win against Charlotte. Tormenta defeated Charlotte 2-1 after a foul led to the game-winning penalty by second team All-League player, Kazaiah Sterling. Despite inexperience, the fledging team does bring a 2-0-1 record against Greenville this season into the match on Saturday. They will need to muster all of their talent to capsize a Greenville side with a wealth of playoff experience.
