Veteran striker makes move to Triumph ahead of Saturday’s season opener
Greenville, SC (March 20, 2023) – The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club has announced the signing of forward Leonardo Castro, pending league and federation approval. The Colombian striker boasts over 18,000 professional minutes at nine clubs across the DStv Premiership and CAF Champions League.
Castro joins Triumph SC after four seasons with noted South African side Kaizer Chiefs FC. Prior to moving to the Chiefs, Castro had an extended stay with the Mamelodi Sundowns from 2015-2018. In three years, he played in 62 matches, recorded 16 goals and eight assists, while hoisting the South African Champions title twice, the South African Cup, CAF Champions League title and CAF Super Cup.
Before playing in South Africa, Castro had seven single-season stints with clubs in Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia. He spent two seasons with Millonarios FC in his home country, winning a league title with the club in 2012.
“We’re delighted we’ve been able to secure Leo’s services”, said head coach & sporting director John Harkes. “He’s a top professional, a great leader, and brings much-needed quality and composure in the attacking third. His experiences throughout his career show that not only can he score goals, but that he likes to be in competitive environments. His winning attitude brings a positive influence to the team culture and attitude of the squad. We’re excited to welcome Leo and his family into our soccer family!”
Castro joins a forward group featuring double-digit goal scorer Jacob Labovitz and rookie Lyam MacKinnon. Pending approval, Castro could be in the mix to play in the Greenville Triumph Home Opener on Saturday, March 25th.
