WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club will look to earn its first point of the season when it travels to Breese Stevens Field on Saturday to face Forward Madison at 7:00 PM.
Triumph SC has endured a rough start to the 2023 season, going winless through two league matches and one U.S. Open Cup match. Making matters worse, the club is yet to score a goal as the new-look attack works to become more cohesive. Despite the poor results, there are reasons for optimism headed in to Saturday night. Greenville is hopefully turning the corner on injuries, with defenders Daniel Wu and Hassan Gabo available for selection this weekend. Allen Gavilanes was able to return to the pitch in Statesboro and should be ready to provide more minutes this weekend, and fellow attacker Devin Boyce continues to build his endurance after being limited in the preseason. With Brandon Fricke returning to training this week after an offseason procedure, the club hopes there’s light at the tunnel from the rash of early season injuries.
In training this week, the team specifically focused on connecting the midfield to the attack in hopes of creating more cohesive attacks on goal. “Guys are ready to take action and rise up,” said Triumph head coach John Harkes. The midfield will hope to benefit from Tevin Shaw and Noah Pilato continuing to round into match form as they get more minutes. Greenville will need to work on some of the defensive lapses that have led to conceded goals this season, and the team will hope to improve on closing spaces after turnovers to minimize quick counterattacks from Madison.
The Flamingos enter Saturday’s league home opener after a shocking upset loss in the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, falling to amateur side Chicago House in extra time at home after holding a 2-0 into the final 20 minutes of the match. The club has only scored one goal in two league matches this season, though it came from an attacker that Greenville is all-too familiar with in Christian Cheney. Chaney made the move to Madison this season after staring for Fuego FC last year, haunting Greenville with a brace to guide the expansion side to a win in its first match.
Greenville will hope to continue the domination of the head-to-head series between the clubs, only losing one match against Madison across the first four seasons of League One play.
