WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club will welcome its first repeat opponent in 2023 to Paladin Stadium this Saturday when the club welcomes the Richmond Kickers to town for a 7:00 PM kick on Autograph Night. 1,000 fans will receive 2023 team posters and all fans are invited on to the field for player autographs following the match.
The Greenville-Richmond matchup is the second of the season between the two League One originals, with Richmond earning a 1-0 victory in March at Greenville’s home opener. Much has changed since that match; Triumph SC continues to progress as a squad while overcoming a rash of injuries that plagued the club in the first month of the season. Greenville’s climb up the table after winning three of its last four matches has helped the club leap Richmond, though they sit even on points with nine.
Richmond enters this weekend’s match in search of its third league one win, only winning once in USL competition since the victory over the Triumph in March. Furthermore, the Kickers have only been able to produce one multi-goal effort through six league matches this year. The lack of goals shouldn’t change Greenville’s approach, as John Harkes and the Triumph know the scoring prowess of former league MVP Emiliano Terzaghi and the quality attacking play the defending regular season champs have been known for.
Greenville’s attacking play has come into form itself lately, with three multi-goal performances in the last four matches. Not coincidentally, those three matches represent GTSC’s three wins this season. The club enjoyed some extra rest after a Wednesday match last week that featured three Triumph goals in a rout of the league-leading Charlotte Independence. Rookie, Lyam MacKinnon notched a goal and an assist, Lucas Coutinho netted another goal and Leo Castro took the league lead in assists in the 3-1 win.
As Greenville’s play has improved, so has the club’s health. Despite Aaron Walker picking up a hamstring injury last week, the club’s injury list continues to shrink. Tevin Shaw and Brandon Fricke should be at or near full health for Saturday’s match, giving the Greenville back line its most depth this season headed in to a battle of two teams looking to solidify a spot in the top half of the league.
