WHAT TO WATCH FOR
After a Peach States Derby match against South Georgia Tormenta last week, the Greenville Triumph Soccer Club will focus its efforts on another rivalry Saturday evening. This weekend’s meeting will mark the Triumph’s second “Battle of the Belt” contest against Union Omaha of the 2023 campaign.
The rivalry has not had a shortage of thrills, especially in the two sides’ first match of the season: a 3-3 draw at Werner Park on May 24th. Down 3-1 after 70 minutes, a penalty kick by Devin Boyce and a volley from outside the box by Jacob Labovitz helped the Triumph split the points. The match was Boyce’s first at Omaha’s home stadium since joining Greenville in the offseason and he made the most of it, scoring one goal and assisting another on his way to Team of the Week honors in Week 11.
Following the Omaha match, the Triumph earned a 1-1 draw against Tormenta last weekend. An in-form Leonardo Castro, who has scored in each of his last four appearances, found the back of the net in the 74th minute. However, a late penalty call and subsequent goal by the visitors, leveled the score. In the final minute of regular time, midfielder Devon Boyce was issued his second yellow card and ejected from Saturday’s match. With Boyce unavailable to Greenville, the team’s depth will be challenged as they compete against a talented Omaha squad. GTSC continues to be plagued by injuries on offense and defense with Tevin Shaw, Jamie Smith, Noah Franke, and Hassan Gabo still out. On a brighter note, Lucas Coutinho and Aaron Walker have the potential to see the field on Saturday for the first time in weeks. Although, Coutinho and Walker have the chance to play there is no guarantee they’ll be ready for the full 90′. Greenville will have to address the vacancy in the midfield either way and be creative with its personnel in the upcoming match.
Greenville currently sits eighth in the league standings with a 3-3-5 record, while a 3-0 loss to the Charlotte Independence dropped an Omaha side that has allowed eight goals in its last three games to ninth with a 2-5-3 mark. Heading into this matchup, both clubs are hoping to put an end to winless runs that have kept them below the playoff line. Greenville has gone 0-1-3 since picking up a 3-1 win against second-place Charlotte Independence on May 3rd. The Owls have earned three draws and suffered two losses on their own five-game winless stretch, with their last victory coming against Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC on April 29th.
