WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Thanks to tropical storm Ophelia, Greenville and Richmond have delayed Saturday’s match until Sunday the 24th. In the hopes of fairer weather, the two teams will kick off at 4:00 PM in City Stadium. Although Richmond has been eliminated from playoff contention, this match still holds broader implications for Greenville’s potential playoff run.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
RIC- Landon Johnson, forward: Richmond recently signed their youngest professional in Virginia native, Landon Johnson. At just 16, Johnson has already recorded minutes as a pro after subbing on versus Forward Madison. With the potential absence of leading scorer, Emiliano Terzaghi, Richmond will need a pair of fresh legs if they hope to get some points on the board.
GVL- Fernando Garcia, forward: The former FC Tucson player signed with Greenville earlier this week and has a chance to make an instant impact. The 24-year-old joins on late in the season to help Greenville address some of its recent scoring woes. It’s uncertain whether Garcia will make an appearance in the 18, but with his previous success in both League One and Two, he will be a player to keep an eye on approaching post-season.
NEWS AND NOTES
Team of the Week:
Jamie Smith, defender: In Greenville’s pivotal 1-0 victory in Knoxville on Saturday, Smith tallied eight clearances and two blocks – both tied for the most on the week – to go along with four duels won, two chances created and two recoveries.
Playoff Picture:
A fruitful weekend in Knoxville led Greenville to a 1-0 victory and a stay in its current sixth seed in the table. But only four points separate the sixth and seventh place teams, meaning Greenville needs another critical win this weekend over Richmond to securely place them above the cutoff line.
