South Carolina Derby Produces Intense Match, 1-0 Triumph Win
Columbia, SC (March 20, 2023)- In a clash marked by intensity and determination, the Greenville Triumph SC emerged victorious against in-state amateur club SC United Bantams in the opening round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in Columbia on Wednesday. The match, characterized by a chippy atmosphere with fouls on both sides and heated exchanges between players, showcased the competitive spirit of South Carolina soccer.
The Triumph seized the lead just before halftime courtesy of a well-executed set piece. Lyam MacKinnon’s precise delivery found Leo Castro in the 45th minute, whose powerful header found the back of the net, giving Greenville a crucial advantage heading into the break.
Despite Greenville’s dominance for much of the second half, the Bantams refused to relent and came close to equalizing on several occasions. However, a standout moment from goalkeeper Gunther Rankenburg, who made a crucial sliding one-on-one save, ensured that Greenville held on to their narrow 1-0 lead until the final whistle.
“The guys put in a really, really solid professional effort tonight,” said Head Coach Rick Wright. “It was a very difficult surface to play on, but we adapted and played really well. I’m real proud of the guys, they rose to the occasion.”
With this hard-fought victory, Greenville Triumph SC advances to the next stage of the tournament, reaffirming their reputation as contenders in the Lamar Hunt Open Cup. The Triumph’s next regular season match will be this Saturday in Paladin Stadium against Forward Madison. Tickets are on sale now.
