Former Georgia Southern Head Coach to assist Carlson
(Greenville, SC) February 16, 2022 – The Greenville Triumph today introduced Kevin Kennedy as an assistant coach for its’ W League team, which begins its inaugural season this May. Kennedy has served as the Assistant Director of Academic Services for athletics at Clemson University since November 2015.
Kennedy will be reuniting with Head Coach Julie Carlson after serving as her assistant coach at Anderson University. During their first season together, the Trojans made it to the semifinal of the South Atlantic Conference tournament and held a 9-6-2 overall record in conference play. Kennedy previously served as head coach of men’s soccer at Georgia Southern University from 2005-2016, posting a 65-99-12 over 10 seasons. While in Statesboro, he coached 23 all-conference selections, two conference freshmen of the year and one conference player of the year. He holds a United States Soccer Federation ‘A’ license and has received an Advanced National diploma and Director of Coaching diploma from United Soccer Coaches (USC).
“I’m looking forward to being a part of the Greenville Triumph’s inaugural season in the W league. And I’m humbled by the opportunity to work with Julie again, as I have a great deal of respect for her as a coach,” said Kennedy. “With Sarah Jacobs on staff, I believe we have a cohesive group that not only shares a common soccer philosophy, but also a set of core values. Julie has assembled an extremely talented group of players, and I can’t wait for the season to get underway.”
Kennedy also coached club and high school soccer prior to coaching in college, including serving six years as the Director of Coaching and Club Director of the Augusta Arsenal Soccer Club. Kennedy earned his undergraduate degree from Augusta University where he also played soccer then continued to his master’s degree in Sport Management from Georgia Southern.
“I am very excited to be working alongside Kevin this summer. Kevin’s strengths of being a good teacher show in his execution of being an effective coach,” said Head Coach Julie Carlson. “He has a charismatic personality which I value a lot from him in his ability to work with players and team culture. Kevin adds a good balance with our staff. His insight on the game has always been a huge component of player growth.”
The Club’s inaugural USL W League season is set to begin May 15 versus Charlotte Independence at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The team has already recruited several current high school, college and former collegiate players from around the Upstate.
