Greenville battles through a lightning delay and finishes with 10 men in Charlotte
Charlotte, N.C. (August 8, 2026) — Greenville Triumph SC traveled to Charlotte for the second time this season to face the Charlotte Independence in the first regular-season meeting between the two sides. With Charlotte entering the night second in the table at 11-4-3 and Greenville continuing its push for a playoff position at 5-9-3.
Greenville came out with attacking intent early, creating several opportunities in the opening 30 minutes. In the 10th minute, Azaad Liadi found space to take a shot from distance, but Charlotte goalkeeper Matt Levy got a hand to the attempt. Five minutes later, William Akio crossed the ball toward Liadi, but his touch sent the effort wide.
Muba Nour continued to provide an attacking threat for Greenville, nearly finding the upper-right corner with a long-range effort in the 21st minute before testing Levy again in the 25th.
After a hydration break in the 31st minute, play was halted in the 43rd minute due to lightning in the area. Following a 45-minute delay, the match resumed with Greenville earning its first corner of the night.
The Triumph continued to push after the restart but Charlotte broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, taking a 1-0 lead. Greenville nearly answered immediately. Just one minute later, Liadi met an Akio cross and shot the ball off the crossbar, inches away from an equalizer.
Knight kept Greenville within striking distance in the 73rd minute with another huge save, but the Triumph were forced to play the final stages of the match with 10 men after Liadi was shown his second yellow card in the 77th minute.
Despite being down a player, Greenville continued searching for an equalizer. In the 87th minute, Jason Bourgey delivered a dangerous free kick toward the back post, but no one was there to finish the opportunity.
The second half remained intense from start to finish, with Greenville continuing to fight for a result despite the deficit and playing a man down. Charlotte ultimately held on for the 1-0 victory.
“The guys on the field and those that came on battled and did everything they could to try and help us get a result. On a massive field away from home, that is a tall task to ask of them, and I was pleased with the effort they gave us all the way to the final whistle,” said Head Coach Dave Dixon.
The Triumph are back on the road Wednesday August 12th as they travel to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the mingos and return home to GE Vernova Park on August 15th as they take on One Knoxville for a 7 PM kickoff.
