Greenville battles back in the second half but Spokane holds on for a 2-1 victory
Spokane, WA (August 22, 2026) — Greenville Triumph SC battled Spokane Velocity FC on the road Saturday night in the first meeting between the two sides this season, but ultimately fell 2-1 as Spokane held onto its one-goal lead.
With both teams fighting for important points in the playoff race, Spokane entered the match sitting sixth in the table while Greenville looked to gain ground in the standings.
Spokane came out on the front foot, recording its first shot on target in the second minute. Amal Knight was called into action early, making a save in the seventh minute on Spokane’s third shot of the match.
The Triumph created their first dangerous opportunity in the 16th minute when Muba Nour put a shot on target that was deflected by Spokane goalkeeper Sean Lewis. Spokane broke through in the 27th minute with an own goal to take a 1-0 lead. The hosts doubled their advantage three minutes later, scoring again in the 30th minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Greenville responded quickly after the break. In the 54th minute, Patrick Seagrist delivered a dangerous corner into the box. Patti brought the ball down with his chest before finishing into the net for his first professional goal, cutting Spokane’s lead to 2-1.
“Obviously feels great to get my first professional goal despite the result,” Patti said. “I have been working for it all year and finally got one in tonight. Hope to continue that momentum for the rest of the season and keep going and getting stronger with the team.”
The Triumph continued to push for an equalizer, earning another corner in the 75th minute. Five minutes later, Seagrist nearly found the back of the net when Nour played a ball into the box. Seagrist’s attempt was deflected by a Spokane defender, sending the ball out for another Greenville corner.
Greenville also welcomed Dj Benton back to the pitch in the 84th minute, marking his first appearance of the season after returning from injury.
Greenville continued to press late, while Knight kept the Triumph within striking distance. In the 86th minute, the goalkeeper came up with an outstanding save to keep Spokane’s lead at one.
The Triumph had one final opportunity in stoppage time. In the 93rd minute, Boyce stepped up for a free kick that sparked a scramble in front of goal. After a flurry of shots and deflections, Boyce got the final touch, but his attempt sailed just over the crossbar. Despite the late push, Spokane held on for the 2-1 victory.
“We need to continue to work to create more chances and moments in the game when we can control the game,” said Head Coach Dave Dixon. “Every game remaining is like a playoff game for us, and we need to play with that mentality.”
The Triumph return home next weekend for a key matchup against FC Naples at GE Vernova Park. The match will feature Star Wars Night and Upstate Soccer Night as Greenville continues its push for a playoff position.
