Greenville Fights For 2-2 Draw Against Forward Madison FC

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Triumph fought back to a 2-2 draw against Forward Madison FC in its Wednesday night matchup at Triumph Stadium. Down 2-0 within the first 20 minutes, the Triumph scored two unanswered goals of their own from Andrew Booth and Marios Lomis. The lone point keeps Greenville undefeated through their 2021 home schedule to date, while the two goals allowed mark the team’s fourth consecutive match without a clean sheet.
A goal conceded in the first fifteen minutes has become common practice during the grueling stretch, and tonight was no different as Forward Madison opened the scoring in the 11th minute of action when a penalty kick was awarded. Aaron Molloy put one right down the middle to give the Mingos a 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, a turnover in the midfield put Greenville in retreat while the ball found former Triumph striker Jake Keegan down the left flank. Keegan held the attack and passed to the wide open run of Molloy, who found the back of the net once again on a missile strike from distance. Molloy’s second goal was the first goal conceded during the run of play since their weeknight match against NCFC.
Down 2-0 with plenty of game left to play, the fatigue was becoming obvious both mentally and physically, as the wear of five matches across 13 days had the Greenville players exhausted and without much relief on the bench. Despite the fatigue, the Triumph continued to push and were able to break through in 29th minute when Aaron Walker played a key ball to switch the point of attack, finding Gavilanes 1v1 on the left side. Gavilanes got to the byline and served a perfect ball into the box that only needed a toe poke from Andrew Booth, as the young professional netted his second goal of the season and put Greenville back in the game 2-1.
The second half was back and forth between both sides. Greenville was the victim of a few unlucky deflections but were finding more opportunities in the final third. In the 66th minute, Greenville was awarded a penalty kick after a deliberate handball in the box. The Dutchman Marios Lomis stepped into the box, calm and collected, and was able to put the Triumph back even at two apiece.
The last 20 minutes of the match saw a number of fouls, but it felt inevitable that Greenville would score a third. Up until the final whistle blew, Greenville continued to knock on the door, but they would settle for the point and 2-2 draw to remain undefeated at their home stadium. Tonight’s result is the fourth time out of six meetings that Forward Madison and Triumph SC have played to a draw.
Greenville returns to action Saturday, June 26, traveling to CHI Memorial Stadium in Chattanooga for their first matchup with the Red Wolves. The Red Wolves currently sit just below Greenville in the League One standings.

The Mingos lineup features two previous Greenville Triumph players in Jake Keegan and Carlos Gomez. Keegan led the Triumph in goals throughout the 2019 season while Gomez led the team in points. Now captain of the Wisconsin side, Keegan is sitting at fourth in the league with four goals.
Forward Madison has yet to win a match against Greenville through the last two seasons and hasn’t found three points since May 29 of the 2021 season, defeating Tormenta FC 3-1. The 2-3-2 Mingos sit right below the cutoff line in seventh place with 12 points across eight games played. They boast the second fewest goals conceded across the league with eight compared to Greenville’s nine, yet having the second lowest goal conversion rate at 10% compared to Greenville’s 14%.
what to watch for
Overcoming Fatigue: Greenville is in the midst of a grueling stretch of matches that began immediately after the club’s three-week layoff. Triumph SC traveled to NTSC Sunday, June 13 (3-0 loss), played a home match Wednesday, June 16 (2-1 win), traveled to Statesboro, Georgia for a match on Saturday, June 19 (3-1 loss) and are now back in the Upstate for their first match against Forward Madison. The club will then travel to Chattanooga for a Saturday, June 26 matchup. Per head coach John Harkes after Saturday’s loss to Tormenta FC, “We are depleted, and there are many injuries we’re working through right now. We do have to make better decisions on the field in critical situations, that’s even more important when fatigued. However, we are still in a good place due to our positive start to the season, and we have to pick ourselves up and be ready to go again on Wednesday.” The home crowd will play a big role in the energy available as the Triumph look to get back to clean sheets on Wednesday night.
New Impacts: As mentioned before, five matches across 13 days is heavy. Three of those matches have involved travel — even heavier. From the start of the season up until this point, Greenville has had the lion’s share of its original starting XI suffer injuries. The only players who have played in every game have been Brandon Fricke, Tyler Polak, Max Hemmings and Marios Lomis, although Lomis came into preseason camp rehabbing an ankle injury. However, head coach John Harkes has always believed in the depth of his roster — not necessarily depth from a numbers perspective although that is critical now, but depth from a skill perspective. Harkes believes that every player he signs can make reasonable impacts on any given match. We’ve seen several substitutions make immediate impacts on the game including the likes of Andrew Booth, Allen Gavilanes and Jesus Ibarra. Now, some of those faces are playing considerable minutes and will continue to do so throughout this jam-packed stretch of matches.
On the flip side, Forward Madison newcomer Aaron Molloy has found his footing quite well. The deep-lying playmaker adds a high quality presence to The Mingos and has proved instrumental to their attack so far.

Lomis Featured on Cleer Audio Team of the Week

Greenville, SC – Triumph newcomer Marios Lomis is making his presence known at the League One level as he leads the league in goals with seven, scoring one in each of Greenville’s Week 11 matches and earning a spot on Cleer Audio’s Team of the Week.
Marios Lomis’ (F) scorching run in front of goal is showing no signs of stopping. Greenville beat North Carolina FC 2-1 last Wednesday behind a goal and an assist from the Dutchman, and he recorded Triumph SC’s lone goal in its loss to Tormenta as well.
The Triumph face Forward Madison for the first time in 2021 this Wednesday, June 23 at Triumph Stadium at Legacy Early College. Kickoff is at 7:00pm, and gates will open at 6:00pm.
Triumph SC Falls 3-1 in Statesboro

Statesboro, GA – The Greenville Triumph were defeated 3-1 by South Georgia Tormenta FC Saturday night in Statesboro, Georgia in the third match of a grueling five-match stretch for the club.Tormenta FC was able to capitalize on two free kicks and a penalty kick to bag their three goals, while Marios Lomis tallied his seventh goal of the season.
Greenville came out strong from the kickoff, putting Tormenta under pressure early that led to a Lomis shot on target within the first twenty seconds. Tormenta FC settled in, and Greenville did well throughout the first half to get numbers behind the ball as John Harkes’s side shifted from a 4-3-3 to a 4-5-1 on the defensive side of the ball. The formation changes allowed Greenville to collect the ball in dangerous parts of the pitch, which led to a few quality opportunities including a Don Smart missile just wide of the goal in the 13th minute.
Both sides had swings of momentum throughout the first half until Tormenta FC was able to capitalize first on a set piece just outside of the 18-yard box, as pin-point delivery from Luca Mayr-Falten and a diving header from Lars Eckenrode gave Tormenta FC a 1-0 lead.
With two minutes of stoppage time to play in the first half, Tormenta FC was awarded another set piece from distance. Mayr-Falten delivered another dangerous ball into the run of two unmarked South Georgia players. The right bounce off the chest for Nick O’Callaghan and Tormenta FC headed into halftime up 2-0 on the defending league champions.
Greenville responded in a big way, getting one back within five minutes of the second half start from none other than the league’s top scorer and Greenville’s point leader, Marios Lomis. His header from the box off an Abdi Mohamed service put the Triumph back in the match, a 2-1 game with almost an entire half left to play.
Both teams had their chances throughout the second half; but with less than 10 minutes left to play, Tormenta was awarded a penalty kick, and Marco Micaletto made it 3-1 with his fourth goal of the season.
With their win tonight, South Georgia has won four straight matches for the first time since the club’s first League One season (2019). Greenville has now gone down a goal in three consecutive matches, losing two of the last three. The Triumph have suffered a number of injuries to key players throughout the last few weeks including 2020 All-League First Team selection Noah Pilato and veteran central defender, Evan Lee while Alex Morrell was unavailable to play in tonight’s match due to receiving two yellow cards, a subsequent red card, in Wednesday night’s match against NCFC.
Triumph SC returns to Triumph Stadium at Legacy Early College for Pride Night presented by hummel on Wednesday, June 23 at 7:00pm. The weeknight match will mark this season’s first matchup between Forward Madison and Greenville Triumph.
Match Preview | Greenville Triumph SC @ South Georgia Tormenta FC

Statesboro, GA – For the second time this season, Greenville Triumph travel to Erk Russell Park to face regional rival, South Georgia Tormenta FC. The two sides have met a total of seven times over the last three seasons with Greenville leading 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 this year, last meeting on May 22 also at Erk Russell Park. Marios Lomis scored the lone goal of the match off an assist from midfielder, Don Smart.
This will mark the Triumph’s third match in a one-week span including a trip to Arlington, Texas and a grueling home match on Wednesday night. After going down a goal early in the first half, Greenville fought to score two unanswered goals, winning 2-1 in 93 minutes of action. Don Smart recorded his first goal while Marios Lomis and Max Hemmings found their first assists of the season. Scoring the game-winner in the 48th minute, Lomis once again took lead of the Golden Boot race with six goals through seven games.

scouting Tormenta FC
Much has changed for the South Georgia side since these two teams last shared the pitch. Heading into the May 22 matchup, Tormenta FC had just one win through five matches and had allowed eight goals, third most in the league, with only a 10% conversion rate in front of goal.
Almost one month later, Tormenta FC has found a hot streak, winning three straight with the capability of jumping into third place with a win on Saturday. Should Tormenta FC down the Triumph, it will mark the first-ever four-game win streak since the club’s inception. The difference for Tormenta FC through the last few weeks has more to do with the defensive side of the ball. South Georgia has logged three clean sheets, yet they have remained at the same 10% shots on goal to goals scored conversion rate.
what to watch for
Be Steady: Greenville’s jam-packed June schedule is bound to cause fatigue both physically and mentally. It’s a grueling stretch of matches, and Greenville has already experienced quite a number of adversities through the beginning stages of the season including nagging injuries to key players, playing down a man on a multiple occasions, and a very long mid-season layoff. And after suffering an uncharacteristic loss to North Texas, it would have been easy to get caught up in trying to make adjustments. Adjustments are good and quite often necessary; but for Greenville, it’s more about understanding what has led to their continued success — consistently doing the small things right and believing that quality performances are more important than results.
Everyone’s Best Shot: Part of being a title-winning side is understanding that everyone is going to give you their best. Harkes has stated multiple times throughout his League One tenure that there are no easy games and that every single team is capable of winning on any given day. Being the defending title-winning club only amplifies that fact. For Tormenta FC specifically, they’re going for their first-ever four-game win streak at their home field and a potential to jump firmly into a top spot in the standings. Match that with the well-established regional rivalry between the two sides and this game will be no walk in the park despite how it may look from the stats column.

Greenville Battles Back In Gritty 2-1 Win

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Triumph battled through adversity to bag a crucial bounce-back win Wednesday night, coming back to secure a 2-1 victory against NCFC despite trailing 1-0 early and going down a man with 25 minutes to play.
It was an exhilarating first 45 minutes of action, starting from the fifth minute when 2020’s Goalkeeper of the Year put in another Save of the Week contender. Jaye’s massive opening save felt similar to last week’s 3-0 loss at North Texas, as did the North Carolina FC goal that followed in the 11th minute of action. The Jay Tee Kamara goal ensued a series of arguments with the officials, as the sideline referee jolted the offside flag in the air only to put it down as the play progressed towards goal.
North Carolina seemingly had all the momentum with the movement up front, especially the delayed run from deeper players, causing problems for the Greenville backline, who were yet again without star center back, Evan Lee.
Greenville did well to contain the pressure from North Carolina early and soon found quality shot opportunities from Smart, Lomis and Allen Gavilanes, who recorded his first professional start along with defender Jacob Goodall. As Greenville continued to fight for the momentum, North Carolina was still finding gaps in the Triumph backline. Battling through the North Carolina attacking runs, the Upstate side continued to show up in the moments that mattered most, including a tremendous effort play by co-captain Tyler Polak who stopped a 1v1 breakaway in the 25th minute.
With just under ten minutes left to go in the first half, Greenville tied things when Don Smart found the back of the net for the first time this season, connecting with a cheeky slip from Marios Lomis who logged his first assist on the year. Greenville continued to knock on the door for a second goal but headed into halftime tied at one.
Although Greenville had seen a slower start to its two previous matches, the Triumph’s second half was anything but slow. In the 48th minute, Lomis found his way back on the score sheet on a skilled outside of the foot finish after a creative passing sequence at the top of box.
It was an incredibly physical match from start to finish that the officials struggled to control. After getting into a scuffle early on in the match that led to a yellow card, midfielder Alex Morrell was carded a second time in the 65th and subsequently ejected from the match.
Greenville controlled the entirety of the second half even after going down a man, playing with grit and determination to collect three points at home. The Lomis game-winning finish was enough for the Triumph to collect their fifth win of the season and remain undefeated at home.
The Triumph travel to Erk Russell Park for their third match in just one week as they face South Georgia Tormenta FC on Saturday, June 19 at 8:00pm.

scouting ncfc
The North Carolina side has failed to find three points in a match this season, but results don’t always tell the whole picture. Despite the winless record, North Carolina FC has only been shutout twice in the team’s opening five matches, including a 0-0 draw against Richmond a few weeks back. NCFC came out very strong against the Triumph in the first meeting between the two sides and had the match knotted at one until Lachlan McLean’s game winner in the 65th minute. North Carolina FC is a team that’s very capable of breaking lines of pressure quickly, a young team that’s full of energy and dangerous on the long ball. With time, space and a lack of pressure on the ball, their pace and delivery could prove problematic for any backline.
What to Watch For
Finding The Rhythm: It was an uncharacteristic performance for the defending champions on Sunday. Head Coach John Harkes felt that, “At the end of the day, too many quality players had poor performances.” While the general disappointment is understandable from the high-quality side that is Greenville Triumph, the short turnaround might prove to be helpful with regards to mentality. With matches spaced no more than four days apart over the next two weeks, there is no time to dwell on what should have been done. Across 28 matches, a loss here and there is really just a blimp on the record; and for Greenville, the most important thing now is the response and building confidence in their ability once again.
The Long Ball: As mentioned earlier, North Carolina’s record doesn’t show the full picture. When given time and space on the ball, NCFC can be quite dangerous with their delivery and pace up front. That was made evident throughout the first half of the May 8 matchup between these two sides, as NCFC was able to expose the gaps in behind Greenville on multiple occasions. However, that game was played without the heartbeat Greenville’s midfield with both Noah Pilato and Aaron Walker out with injuries.

Triumph SC Falls to North Texas in First Match After Layoff

Arlington, TX – A slow start for the Greenville Triumph following a three-week layoff proved too much to overcome, as the club fell for the first time this season in a 3-0 loss to the 2019 League One Champion North Texas SC at Globe Life Park.
A quick start from the home team forced Greenville goalkeeper Dallas Jaye, who returned to the States from international duty yesterday, to make an impressive save just minutes into the match. North Texas put the Triumph backline under immense pressure throughout the first half and were able to capitalize first after a few deflections in the box led to a open look for Gibran Rayo. In the 28th minute, North Texas doubled their lead with a stunner from Kalil ElMedkhar.
Greenville came out quickly in the second half until North Texas found the winning side of a set piece that continued to float in dangerous space inside the Greenville 18-yard box. Down 3-0, the Greenville bench was unable to narrow the deficit following several subs in hopes of keeping the squad fresh as they head into a grueling stretch of matches.
Though the match didn’t end in favor of Greenville, the club’s highlight of the night went to former Furman player Cole McLagan, as he made his professional debut subbing in at 73rd minute.
The Triumph return back home to Triumph Stadium as they take on North Carolina FC this Wednesday, June 16 at 7pm. Tickets and more information can be found here.
