2019 By The Numbers

With the 2019 season wrapped up, Greenville Triumph looks back at some impressive stats and numbered facts from the club’s inaugural USL League One campaign.
35: The total number of USL League One Team of the Week appearances by Triumph SC players. Jake Keegan, whose season was cut short due to injury, led the way with eight Team of the Week honors, followed five total appearances from Cole Seiler and four weeks for the co-captain, Aaron Walker.
5: The total number of Player of the Week honors earned by Triumph SC players throughout the regular season. Carlos Gomez led the team with two POTW nods followed by Paul Clowes, Tyler Polak and Dallas Jaye with one each.
2: The number of Player of the Month honors earned by Triumph SC players throughout the regular season. Dallas Jaye was named USL League One Player of the Month for August and Carlos Gomez earned the recognition the next month!
8: The number of multi-goal games throughout the year. The first multi-goal game for Triumph SC was recorded during the club’s inaugural home opener, defeating Lansing Ignite 2-1. Greenville would only showcase two more multi-goal games during the first half of the season, with one of those games resulting in a loss to Chattanooga. Flash forward to the last game in July and Triumph SC would take a season-defining three points from league-leading North Texas SC with four goals, setting fire to Greenville’s attack. Greenville would go on to tally five of their eight multi-goal games during the second half of the season with three straight 1+ goal games in the month of September.
29,687: The total accumulated minutes of the 20 players that stepped onto the pitch during the 2019 season. The Minutes Played column was led by defensive standout Tyler Polak (2,610 minutes) and GK Dallas Jaye (2,610 minutes). Both players started 29 matches, each only missing one match throughout the season (Polak – yellow card suspension, Jaye – international callup). Aaron Walker and Evan Lee played well over the 2,000 minute mark racking up 2,577 and 2,518 minutes respectively. Three other Triumph SC players went over the 2,000 minute mark, including Cole Seiler (2,483), Carlos Gomez (2,261) and central defender Kevin Politz, with 2,242 minutes played.
14: The league-leading stat in shutouts. Perhaps the most defining characteristic of the Greenville Triumph squad was their defensive presence and consistency. Only five players contributed to every single Triumph clean sheet (meaning they started or subbed in), proving that the defensive responsibility fell on every player and made Greenville a true 11-man defensive unit.
3: The number of Triumph SC players awarded an All-League First Team honor. Greenville was the only club to boast three players on the First Team — Tyler Polak (D), Cole Seiler (D) and Dallas Jaye (GK).
75.8%: The average percentage of successful passes per game. Triumph SC was a team that prided themselves on ball possession – boasting 8,880 successful passes during the season, an average of 390 passes per game. Head Coach John Harkes constructed a team to build attacks from the back line, and it showed with nearly an 88% passing accuracy in the defensive half.
6: The team’s longest unbeaten streak. After turning a corner at the end of July to beat North Texas SC on the road 4-0, Triumph SC would spend all of August undefeated. Here’s what it looked like: July 26 vs NTSC, 4-0. August 3 vs Tormenta, 1-0. August 9 vs Toronto, 3-1. August 17 vs Forward Madison, 0-0. August 23 vs Toronto 0-0. August 28 vs Forward Madison, 1-0. Greenville gained 14 points during the six-game streak and brought themselves back in to playoff contention.
1: The number of goalkeepers in League One to tally 10 shutouts. Dallas Jaye led the league by a wide margin, with 14 clean sheets on the year. Jaye was named the first-ever Golden Glove Winner and 2019’s Goalkeeper of the Year. He finished the regular season with 52 saves and only 23 goals allowed.
4,014: The largest crowd in attendance at Legacy Early College Field to watch a Greenville Triumph SC match! The Upstate showed up in sell-out fashion twice during 2019. It’s only fitting that it was the opening match on April 6th and the team’s last home game on September 27th. Thank you, Triumph Nation!

Dallas Jaye named USL League One Goalkeeper of the Year

USL League One announced on Monday that Greenville Triumph SC goalkeeper Dallas Jaye had been voted the 2019 League One Goalkeeper of the Year. The Guam international added to his prior League One Golden Glove award after a regular season in which he posted 13 shutouts while helping lead Triumph SC to a place in the League One Final.
Jaye received 51 percent of the vote to claim the award, with Chattanooga Red Wolves SC’s Alex Mangels finishing second on 27 percent and the Richmond Kickers’ Akira Fitzgerald finishing third with 22 percent.
The 2019 USL League One Awards were voted on by team management. Voting was conducted following the conclusion of the 2019 League One regular season.
Jaye’s fourth professional season marked his first as a starter having previously served as a back-up in the USL Championship at both FC Cincinnati (2016-17) and Phoenix Rising FC (2018). An All-Big East First Team selection in his senior season at Xavier University, and a former standout in USL League Two for FC Tucson, Jaye became a centerpiece for the best defense in League One as he posted a 0.78 goals-against average in 27 appearances across the regular season.
“I attribute all the success of this season to my club,” said Jaye. “Coach Harkes took a chance on me and gave me all the confidence in the world to go out and perform at a high level this season. Alex Blackburn and our goalkeeper group pushed the level every day, being critical with the smallest details that ultimately make the big differences, which showed throughout the year. Ryan McKie, the strength and conditioning coach, pushed me off the field to keep my mind and body going in the right direction during this grueling season. Rick Wright, our assistant coach, offered countless insights that helped make the game easier to read and understand.”
“My teammates, I can’t say enough about them. They were absolute giants on the field the entire season and I am very grateful to have shared the successes of this year with them, including this award. “
In addition to competing for Triumph SC, Jaye continued his role as the starter for the Guam National Team, and earlier this year helped the country qualify for the second stage of 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying in Asia. The Matao will continue their campaign on November 19 when they face the Maldives.
Greenville Triumph Fall in Frisco in Inaugural USL League One Final

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club closed the books on their memorable first season, suffering a 1-0 defeat in the championship match against North Texas and officially being named the 2019 USL League One Finalists.
Despite the final score, Triumph SC brought a thrilling, fast-paced tempo into Toyota Stadium with double-digit goal-scoring opportunities recorded after 90 minutes of action. One of Greenville’s best scoring chances came in the 15′ minute when Chris Bermudez, positioned just inside the box, collected a great cross from Omar Mohamed and fired a strike that hit the near-post before falling into the hands into the hands of main-stay MLS goalkeeper, Kyle Zobeck.
The game would settle itself after the first 25 minutes and sent the clubs into the locker rooms tied 0-0 at the half. North Texas, able to regroup after several near-miss Greenville chances, quickly put pressure on the Triumph back line and eventually broke through when Greenville experienced a rare defensive miss clearing in the box, leading to an Arturo Rodriguez goal in the 60′ minute.
Fighting from a 1-0 deficit, Triumph SC showed to be the more aggressive squad, creating quality combination sequences and an onslaught of close-range chances, though none of which were able to sneak passed the experienced Zobeck. Greenville would end up recording 18 shots and nine on goal, doubling North Texas’s nine recorded shots (two on goal).
Even though they fell just short of a championship, it was an incredible run for a team that was built from scratch in less than 18 months.
“Regardless of the playoff outcome, we won this season,” said head coach John Harkes. “What we were able to accomplish as a team, a staff, and an organization, in such short time was remarkable. We feel like we’ve won not just on the field, but off of it and in the community as well. I’m so proud of the guys and we’re looking to getting forward on the field in 2020 and continuing to build this club.”

USL1 Final Preview: Greenville vs North Texas

Greenville Triumph SC (12-9-7) travels to Texas to face regular-season champions, North Texas SC (17-6-5), in the inaugural USL League One Final.
A Look Back: North Texas has dominated every team in the league at some point – Greenville being the exception. The season series sits at 1W-1D-1L, with Triumph SC outscoring North Texas 4-1. Back in July, Greenville became the first League One team to defeat North Texas at Toyota Stadium, handing the eventual regular season champs a lopsided 4-0 defeat. The matched featured Jake Keegan scoring two goals, Aaron Walker and Edmundo Robinson tallying one a piece and a solid Greenville defense that would go on to become the league’s best back line. The two clubs haven’t met since the 10-v-11 Greenville victory, so it’s likely to be a more competitive match up that will take 90+ minutes of hard work and focus.
Playing to Win: It’s easy to get wrapped up in preparing for a particular opponent – especially when that opponent has been at the top of the league for entire season. But Head Coach John Harkes has been preaching to his club this week that it’s not about what other teams can do or the way other teams play. Sure, certain players must be dealt with and certain in-game adaptations can set teams up for more success; however, at the end of the day, Greenville Triumph SC has gotten to the League One Championship because of the way they have performed. That’s the philosophy that has seen a Greenville side come from four wins in four months to the first ever League One final. And that’s the mentality that each player is taking to Texas this weekend – we deserve to be here, and we’re playing to win.
Opposites Attract: The North Texas SC – Greenville Triumph SC match-up is a perfect example of this cliche phrase; but in the world of sports, opposites make for an extremely exciting game. As is known this late in the season, Greenville’s defense is beyond elite with only 22 goals conceded in an eight-month span. However, North Texas SC boasts a dynamic, movement-oriented attack that has scored 55 goals to Greenville’s 33. Additionally, much of the Texas attack is created off the dribble (350 successful dribbles to Greenville’s 250), where as Greenville is extremely successful combining on the flanks (68 successful crosses to N. Texas’s 45) and creating opportunities from the outside in. NTSC is also a team that has played together for quite a number of years as a development team under the umbrella of MLS side, FC Dallas. Greenville, on the contrary, has been built from the ground up in less than 12 months. Despite their infancy though, Greenville has peaked into a unified and collective unit that is ready to accept the challenge ahead.

USL League One All-Teams Announced for 2019

Greenville, SC – Three Greenville players have been selected to the USL League One All-League First Team. All-League Team selections honor standout performers from the inaugural 2019 season.
Triumph SC goalkeeper Dallas Jaye adds All-League First Team honors to his prior League One Golden Glove award after recording 13 shutouts in the regular season. Jaye is joined by defenders, Tyler Polak and Cole Seiler, who helped Triumph SC concede only 22 goals in 28 regular-season contests.
GK – Dallas Jaye: Jaye led League One with 13 shutouts and a 0.78 goals-against average as he recorded 47 saves in 27 appearances at a 68.7 save percentage.
D – Tyler Polak: Polak led the league with 63 interceptions and also ranked in the top ten among defenders in recoveries (160) and duels won (155 at a success rate of 61.3) as part of Greenville’s league-best defense.
D – Cole Seiler: Seiler was the lone defender in League One to win more than 100 aerial duels, recording 107 at a 61.8 percent success rate, and also ranked in the top four among defenders in duels won with 176.
Greenville Triumph SC will compete in the first-ever League One Final against regular-season champions, North Texas SC. The number one, number three matchup will take place in Toyota Stadium this Saturday, October 19th. Match details and watch party information can be found here.
Triumph's Carlos Gomez Voted Player of the Month for Pre-Playoff Performance

Greenville, SC – GTSC midfielder Carlos Gomez has been voted USL League One’s Player of the Month for September and October after recording five goals and 18 chances created in six appearances to help his side advance to the 2019 USL League One Playoffs.
With leading scorer Jake Keegan sidelined due to a season-ending injury, Gomez helped pick up the slack for Greenville’s attack. Gomez recorded the club’s first hat trick in a 4-0 win against FC Tucson on September 13 and found the net once more during the following 3-1 win against Toronto FC II. Both wins helped to get Greenville’s playoff push back on track.
The central midfielder has played an active two-way role over the final six games of the regular season for Triumph SC, completing 128 of 159 passes and 12 of 14 dribbles, winning 35 of 63 duels and recording 34 recoveries over the final stretch of the campaign.
Gomez received 64 percent of a weighted poll that included the USL League One Technical Committee and an online fan vote held at USLLeagueOne.com. The Triumph travel to Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas to compete for the USL League One Final on October 19 at 7:00pm . Match details can be found here.
Greenville Advances To Inaugural USL League One Final

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Triumph SC have advanced to the USL League One Final with a 1-0 win on the road against Lansing Ignite FC.
It was a back and forth match early on as Greenville faced Lansing Ignite for the first round of the USL League One playoffs. Both teams had adequate chances throughout the first half, but were unable to convert.
The clubs went into the locker rooms tied at 0-0; however, Greenville showed that its defensive work can be turned into an offensive possibility as the Triumph midfielders dispossessed the Lansing attackers, sending a transitional moment forward to Omar Mohamed who smoothly found a wide open Carlos Gomez at the top of the 18 yard box. Gomez calmly played the ball towards the right flank, finding an onward running Christopher Bermudez who struck a driven ball, low to the back post, past the Lansing goalkeeper to give Greenville a 1-0 lead.
The goal for Greenville would prove to be enough as the Upstate club would hold its’ ground defensively, gaining another victorious clean sheet and claiming the first round of the inaugural USL League One Playoffs.
The Triumph will travel to Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas to take on North Texas SC on Saturday, October 19 at 7:00 pm for the USL League One Final.
Match Preview 10/12/19

A Look Back: It’s been quite a while since these two clubs met. Greenville hasn’t faced Lansing since the first half of the season, and quite a bit that has changed for both teams since then. Going into the final Greenville-Lansing regular season matchup on June 15th, Lansing had a 3W-4L-4D record with 18 goals allowed and 17 goals scored. In the second half of the season, the Michigan club found their groove with a 8W-2L-5D record that included outscoring their opponents 35-19 and no home losses in 11 straight matches. Greenville, on the other hand, headed into the June 15th matchup with a 3W-4L-3D record, 5 goals scored and 7 goals allowed. The second half looked much different as the Upstate squad would amass a 9W-6L-2D record, outscoring opponents 28-16. The teams that met back in June are much different now, but so is the scenario in which both teams are playing.
The First Twenty: As starting center defender Evan Lee said, “It’ll be a dog fight. Especially the first 20 minutes.” For two teams that haven’t seen each other in four months, the first twenty minutes will be crucial to win – not necessarily by scoring, but by setting a momentum and establishing an authority. Greenville’s midfielders, led by Paul Clowes and co-captain Aaron Walker, will be vital to this goal with their ability to set the match’s tempo and find dangerous pockets of space throughout the Lansing defense.
Back to Basics: The message from Greenville this week has been to get back to the little things that have gotten them to the playoffs – clean sheets, not giving up small fouls, marking on set pieces, and combinations on the flanks. These are the details that have proved a success for Triumph SC and perhaps the details that were missing in the last two Greenville losses. They’ll look to correct these as they travel to a tough road environment aim for a win that would propel them to the inaugural League One Final.
